Member Highlight: Meet Lee

What inspired you to join KUMA?
Like many others, conventional gyms aren’t quite my cup of tea – they often are overwhelming to me and being on sports teams while growing up, I find group exercise most beneficial for me. I was looking for alternative workouts in the area and happened upon Kuma while conducting a Google search – of course the idea of kickboxing was a hook but the all-women aspect was the line and sinker that drew me in.

What keeps you coming back?
There really is no community like the Kuma community – while I haven’t been able to attend any events as of yet due to scheduling conflicts, I have never felt so supported by a group of people who don’t know me all that well. Everyone is nothing but encouraging and supportive of one another and it really is a breath of fresh air.

What challenges have you faced in your fitness journey and how have you overcome them?
The mental aspect of fitness, like motivation, has always been a challenge for me. I find solo workouts difficult to stick with as I often think “Eh I’m feeling kind of tired so, I’ll stop” but group activities and workouts have been so beneficial in helping to keep myself accountable and consistent.

What is your favorite workout or activity at KUMA and why?
BoxLift is easily my favorite workout at Kuma. I used to be really intimidated when it came to using workout equipment because I was scared I’d use them “wrong”. Being introduced to lifting using equipment other those big bulky machines you see at conventional gyms has been so much easier and has led me to love lifting now!

How has the community at KUMA influenced or supported you?
The Kuma community has influenced me to be more appreciative of myself. Something that I hear the coaches say a lot (in not so many words) is “forget all that happened earlier today and focus on the fact that you’re here and you’re kicking butt”. If nothing else, when I go to class I know that I’ve accomplished something just by showing up that day.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey?
It’s going to be hard in the beginning but once you find your niche and your people, it will be one of the best journeys you’ll experience in life.

Is there a fellow member or a coach at KUMA who has been particularly supportive or inspirational to you? Give them a shoutout! Tell us how they’ve made a positive impact on your journey.
Honestly all of the coaches at Kuma have been supportive and are an inspiration to me! I haven’t had the pleasure to attend a class taught by each and every one of them but those of whom I have, have been nothing but amazing. The energy that they bring to their classes is addictive and is what always keeps me coming back for more.

Fun Fact: Tell us something fun or unexpected about yourself – any hobbies, talents, or surprising stories?
One of my favorite hobbies is reading – one year I read more than 100 books! I love almost any and every genre.
