What inspired you to join KUMA?
I was looking for a way to get back to being active as regular gyms without classes don’t really work for me, and I saw an ad for the Westbrook location that said it was opening soon. It looked really interesting, so I took a gamble on myself (and Kuma), and signed up for an OG membership.
What keeps you coming back?
The people for one (coaches and members both), the way I feel when I finish a class knowing I’ve done my best (whether I had 100% or 10% to give that day), the laughter and the camaraderie.
What challenges have you faced in your fitness journey and how have you overcome them?
I’ve struggled with self-image and with consistency, and I’ve had some injuries/health issues that have made things difficult at times, but I’ve found that just putting one foot in front of the other and recognizing that at when you only have 10% to give, that that IS 100%, has made a big difference. I’ve also found that realizing that I can reach out for a hand when I need one has been a giant help.
What is your favorite workout or activity at KUMA and why?
If it’s set to fun music, I’m in. Haha. You’ve probably seen me bopping to the music during wall/bag sits if we’ve been in a workout together. I also have a lot of fun with the obstacle course-type things or anything out of the ordinary, but I really like the regular kickboxing and lift classes too!
How has the community at KUMA influenced or supported you?
Everyone has been really kind and supportive. I had a rough fall/spring due to some things that were happening outside the gym, and everyone has been great.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey?
Don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t instantly great at everything. Just have fun! Don’t judge yourself against anyone else. You are an individual, and everyone in the gym started where you are. Give yourself some grace. (Believe me, I’m still learning all of this. Haha) No one here is judging you!
Is there a fellow member or a coach at KUMA who has been particularly supportive or inspirational to you? Give them a shoutout! Tell us how they’ve made a positive impact on your journey.
Everyone has been great, but I definitely want to shout out Coach Kiira who has been especially fantastic! She is always upbeat, and has been super supportive when I’ve been struggling.
Fun Fact: Tell us something fun or unexpected about yourself – any hobbies, talents, or surprising stories?
Well, I once pet sat for a wallaby. Super random, right? And once upon a time, I started college as a vocal performance major, before switching to theater tech. Somehow I still ended up a paralegal. Life sure is strange. Haha.
