What inspired you to join KUMA?

I had been seeing Facebook ads for a little while and talking to my friends about joining. One day, I saw the ad again and I just figured, why not?

What keeps you coming back?

The community. 100%. I’ve tried a million different workout programs and gyms and none of them ever stuck after the first frenzied burst of energy. I feel like as I was in the middle of my first Foundations class I knew KUMA was different and that I’d be sticking around. Everyone is just so supportive and encouraging, especially the coaches, and it immediately felt different to me.

What challenges have you faced in your fitness journey and how have you overcome them?

I don’t feel like I ever really felt invested enough in my fitness journey to overcome challenges at all until joining KUMA. Things would just fizzle out as I got busy. But with KUMA, I genuinely miss it when I can’t be there. Recently, I hurt my neck and had to take about a month off – it was awful! Before KUMA, I’d welcome a concrete reason to not go to the gym. Since KUMA, that injury made me feel like I was being deprived not only of doing something positive for my body, but of a group of friends I’ve made since joining. Luckily, I’m now getting back into it and just doing what I can, and it feels great to be back.

What is your favorite workout or activity at KUMA and why?

I love Lift. It just makes me feel so strong. There are a bunch of exercises that we do that I would never in a million years thought to try if I were just at a regular gym. But the Lift coaches make me feel capable of anything. My favorites are deadlifts and anything that targets the triceps.

How has the community at KUMA influenced or supported you?

I am certain that I can credit my consistency at KUMA completely to the community. From the moment I walk through the door and see everyone, I feel strong and empowered. It’s someplace I genuinely want to be versus a place I just have to go because it’s good for me.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey?

Well, after telling them they should check out KUMA, I’d tell them that they should be patient with themselves. Do what you can do, listen to your body, modify when you need to. I can tell you honestly that no one at KUMA is judging you or is going to tell you to ignore your body. Just keep showing up and you will be so proud of yourself.

Is there a fellow member or a coach at KUMA who has been particularly supportive or inspirational to you? Give them a shoutout! Tell us how they’ve made a positive impact on your journey.

I have to give a shout out to the OGs, Kiira and Mary, who have made my KUMA experience amazing. They both encourage me, push me, and inspire me and I’m so glad to know them. Also want to shout out my awesome aunt, Stacey, who has also been inspiring me with her amazing work ethic and how she brings her all to every workout at KUMA.

Fun Fact: Tell us something fun or unexpected about yourself – any hobbies, talents, or surprising stories?

My only pet is an elderly bearded dragon named Edith and, yes, she snuggles.
