Mastering Punch Technique: Proper Hand and Wrist Position

In this video, we dive into one of the most crucial elements of a powerful and safe punch—hand and wrist positioning. Whether you’re new to kickboxing or looking to fine-tune your technique, understanding how to align your hands and wrists will help you strike effectively and protect yourself from injury.

Key Points Covered in the Video:

Targeting the Right Knuckles: When throwing a punch, aim to strike with your top two knuckles. While it’s okay to make contact with all four, focusing on the top two will help you maintain proper alignment and deliver more effective punches.

Thumb Placement: It’s essential to keep your thumbs tucked in securely. Thumbs that stick out can easily get injured during impact. Make sure your thumbs are tucked away safely, whether you’re in a guard position or delivering a punch.

Maintaining a Straight Wrist: For maximum power and safety, keep your wrist straight and aligned with your forearm. A bent wrist puts excessive pressure on the joint, which can lead to injuries. This applies not only to straight punches but also to hooks and uppercuts—your wrist should be in line with your elbow, supported by your shoulder and back muscles.

Supporting Each Strike: Think of your punch as a chain of support, starting from your shoulder and extending through your back and arm. Keeping your wrist and elbow stacked properly ensures that each punch is backed by the strength of your entire upper body.

By practicing these tips, you’ll build stronger, safer punches that protect your wrists and make every strike more effective.
